The ExtraTerrestrial

Oh MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

I just walked outside to try to take a picture of the beautiful stars.

I raised my camera to the sky and was SHOCKED to see this creature plummeting right down on me!!  Look:

You got me.  I was JK.  (JK stands for “Just Kidding” for those of you who aren’t as up on the latest jargon like my radical, cool self so surely is.)

Here’s the non-blown-up picture.  It’s a cute little frog on the outside of the kitchen window.  I’m not sure why he decided to stick himself to our window.  Maybe he was trying to escape all the rain.  Maybe he was trying to score some of the ant’s “syrup”action.

FYI, he’s no bigger than a Quarter.

Ants

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

We have ants.

Yeah, like honest to goodness ants.  They only show up when we’ve left food in the sink or on the kitchen counter.  I guess they smell it and then tell all their little friends about the available goodies.  If there is no food, there are no visible ants.  If there is food, especially something sweet, they swarm it.

Come to think of it, they are not at all unlike these teenagers that frequent our house.  SweetGuy and I were enjoying a rare quiet evening on Tuesday while everyone was off at their different activities.  SweetGuy made a pan full of BBQ beef and a few french fries.  It was a late meal as he’d worked pretty late.  Within moments of the completion of cooking the meal, Emmy showed up to workout (Go Em!).  She finished and, at our insistence, grabbed some BBQ.  Then the oddest thing happened.  Within less than five minutes Magoo, Da Kaff, and Dustmeister all arrived out of nowhere and SWARMED the BBQ and emptied the fridge of every single edible thing.  It was JUST LIKE THE ANTS!  Emmy… how did you communicate the presence of food to your fellow teenagers?  Do you have some sort of sonar?  I must figure this out!

Back to the insects.  Magoo did some sort of non-exhaustive Google search and decided we could kill a lot of ants by putting syrup on the counter.  Made sense to me.  The sweet sugar attracts them.  They stick.  They die.  Perfect.

We hatched our plan:

Yes, that’s syrup and a little jelly thrown in for good luck.  Now we wait.

Me:  “Magoo, it’s been 30 seconds and THERE ARE NO ANTS!!”

Magoo:  rolls eyes

Me:  “Magoo, it’s been 2 MINUTES… NO ANTS!!!”

Magoo:  puts head on table

We have an ant, we have an ant sighting!!  Here he is:

My name is Indigo Montoya, you gross me out, prepare to die.

VICTORY, VICTORY, VICTORY!!!  He is trapped by the syrup, LOOK:

Thirty seconds later, as I pace impatiently waiting for more victims, the little guy in the syrup saunters away without a care in the world.  He totally did NOT stick to the syrup.  Soon, it turns out our master plan of death resulted in providing a lovely Saturday brunch for all the neighborhood ants:

They eat their fill and waddle away fat and happy.

Fail.

I blame Magoo.  Her response is “I can’t help it if we have STUPID ants!”

It’s back to the Google-drawing-board for us.

Oh, and here’s something only related to the above story by the fact that it happened at the same time as we were plotting the demise of the ants.  DustMeister took a picture of a very cold squirrel outside our window.  Awwww…

Boys will be Boys – hypothetically

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Hypothetically speaking, we had a pretty sunny, almost-felt-like-Spring day.  Which, naturally, hypothetically, caused all us girls to want to nap.  And we did.

This, hypothetically, left the boys to their own devices.

They, hypothetically, must have been quite bored.

I woke from my slumber to, hypothetically, see them doing this in the front yard:

OK, so they were hypothetically shooting arrows.  Not a big deal, right?  It’s a nice activity to do in central Illinois on a spring like day.  But I had to question their choice of targets, hypothetically, of course.  They were shooting sort of, kind of, somewhat towards each other.  But, they were aiming wide, so no harm, right?

But then, well, I started to wonder if they had gone a bit too far.  I’ve posted some quick shots I took in succession below.  And I’ve altered the pictures somewhat so as to not, hypothetically, incriminate anyone in particular based on an easily identifiable feature.

I give them credit.

For ingenuity.

For getting outside.

For bonding.

For bravery?

Rest assured, that hypothetically, the arrows were not sharp.  And, fortunately these guys can’t catch.

Probably last, but definitely not least, 25 things

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

One of the things we all admire about her Gracefulness is thoroughness.  And, thorough she is.  She spent most of an evening here writing out her 25 things.  And, again, I have to say that I find everyone’s 25 things surprisingly reflective of their personalities, including Grace’s.  She cares to always do her VERY best, no matter the circumstances.  We all need to be more like her.  And Grace, rest assured, you are loved by THIS family!

Grace’s 25 Things
Some of these may already be known and obvious to everyone reading this, and others are a little deeper, but they are all very true.
1. First off, I suppose I should address my name. I love it most of the time, but not during religious talks, especially when the topic is grace. At some point during the talk, everyone has to crane their heads to look over at me. I am not distracted by it until someone obviously can’t understand the difference between Grace and grace. And yes, every person who comes up to me and says, “You’re amazing, Grace” feels very clever and pleased with themselves, which is both irritating and amusing.
2. I hate shoes. I am much more comfortable, inside or out, going the way God made me … shoeless.
3. I say ‘murph’ a lot. When I drop something or can’t find something I need, instead of saying ‘rats’ or ‘shute’ or ‘darn’ I say ‘murph.’
4. I like to think I am pretty independent. I am not the bathroom-buddy type. I am more the person who, when asked to go to the bathroom with a girl-friend gives her a ‘seriously?’ look.
5. I do not like sweatshirts that pull over my head. I prefer ones that zip up the front. For whatever reason, don’t ask me why, I feel fatter in the ones that pull over my head.
6. I am much too serious and boring for my own good. I often wonder how people can put up with me when I am so boring.
7. When I eat things that are individual, like M&Ms or whatever, I have to eat the same number of each color on both sides of my mouth. One red, one red, two blues, two blues, etc. When there is an odd number, I have to bite it in half.
8. I completely ADORE this family: Andi, Sweetguy, Bud, Dustmeister, Emmy, SingingSally, Berserker, BlindDog, Offspring Hater, Bird Killer and Not Quite Right. I love spending time with them… oh and Magoo too. ?
9. I am 5’10” tall and have a love-hate relationship with my height. I like being tall, but it seriously cuts down on the number of cute guys taller than me.
10. I want to get a tattoo, but will probably be too chicken to do it.
11. I cannot flirt. I would feel like a complete airhead if I intentionally flirted with a guy, which is probably why the guys I have had crushes on have had no idea I even looked at them like that.
12. I love pictures of nature: flowers, clouds, rivers, animals, you name it. I think they are the most beautiful pictures in the world.
13. As much as I love them to death, and love spending time with them, sometimes I resent that my friends are so gorgeous (and yes Magoo and Emmy, I am referring to you). I love them and think they are completely stunning, but I get tired of feeling like the fat friend.
14. I have freckles all over my body, not a lot, but in random spots like on my left ring finger, my right calf, and all over my face in the summer.
15. I have 32 first cousins, only 9 of whom are younger than me and 9 of whom I don’t remember meeting. I keep a family tree in my purse to keep track of everyone. I also have an aunt on one side who is older than my grandma on the other side.
16. I swing back and forth between wishing my hair was completely straight and crazy curly. As it is, it is at a horrid place somewhere in the middle.
17. I love my mentor, aka. The blogger, with all my heart and look up to her a lot.
18. I like to feel girlie as often as possible. I like curling my hair and wearing girlie stuff, like jewelry, skirts, dresses, and heels (which I wear 3-4 times a week and find very comfortable). As completely odd and contrary as it is, I don’t ever bother to wear make-up except once every three months or so.
19. I love my baby, my cat, a lot more than I do my dog. Yes I know it is probably wrong to have obvious favoritism but my 15 year old dog is not half as appreciated as my 6 ½ year old kitty.
20. I have a very overactive conscience. I am one of the few people I know who doesn’t : speed (at all, even when I am late), work on homework while the teacher is teaching, text in school, tell people what is on a test I just took, or peek during games (like Heads up 7up).
21. I take things much too seriously when they are really not that big of a deal. For example, I have spent approximately the last two hours working on this list. I just do. Ecclesiastes 9:10.
22. I wear a gold ring with a small diamond on my left middle finger all the time. It is my purity ring, which I received when I turned 13, and when I say all the time, I mean ALL the time. This ring showers with me, plays mud volleyball with me, and doesn’t leave my finger unless I am nervous and need something to fiddle with.
23. I miss my first car really bad. It was a 10 year old gray, two-door Geo Metro. The best was that it was a stick shift, but … alas … the brakes went out.
24. I have never been in a relationship with anyone. There are some plusses to this, like less drama and getting to know some awesome guys in uncomplicated ways. The downsides include loneliness and insecurity. At the same time, hard as it is, I try to have patience for god’s timing.
25. I LOVE PEOPLE!!!! I am always happier when I am with other people. They build me up and show me how I can better show love. The ones I love, especially those mentioned earlier, are the BEST things that have EVER happened to me.

25 from Singing Sally

Monday, February 16th, 2009

These were so much fun for me (Andi) because of all the great memories they bring back.  Over the years, as I run into people from high school, sometimes the subject of my sister will come up and I will ask if they remember her.  Some do right away, and others while trying to conjure up who they think she is will invariably ask me “Was she always smiling?”

She IS incredibly strong, and she IS an inspiration.

Here are her 25:

1) I was elected president of National Honor Society my Senior year of high school.
2) I started singing “professionally” when I was nine. I made $1.83 singing “Puff the Magic Dragon” while hiding behind my Mom because I was so scared. While I sang, my relatives threw change into the top of a Monopoly box. That was the beginning and the end of my professional singing career.
3) I am a Physical Therapist assistant and I LOVE what I do.
4) I have a simple faith – but I think that is what makes it SO unshakable.
5) I can honestly say that I don’t get mad or angry. (Hey Shutup!@@&%#@{%)
6) My kids think that when I die they should somehow wire my mouth with a smile – otherwise they say no one will recognize me in the casket. I am thankful that I have such a reputation.
7) I have an “icky bone” I hate collar bones and can’t stand to look at them, talk about them or have anybody touch them.
8) I have been a part of some sort of singing group since I was in 7th grade.
9) I have moved 21 times since I was born.
10) I love water, I love to listen to it, look at it, sit by it……..
11) I was a “Fork”atarian for many years. I refused to use a spoon for anything – except for soup when eating out. Why did I do this – just cause I could. Try it! I still like Forks much better than spoons!
12) I had very bad bucked teeth when I was young and was teased a lot. I have worn a retainer every night for 36 years!
13) I think one of my strengths is – finding the good in everyone.
14) Jesus is my heartbeat!
15) I have learned this year that I am a very strong person.
16) I was a POM POM girl in high school!!
17) I have been to five different countries. US, Mexico, Switzerland, Germany and England.
18) My kids ROCK!
19) We got a new Puppy for Christmas. Her name is SAJE! S-ally, A-ubrie, J-ake, E-mily. She Rocks too!
20) Every stage of life that my kids were in was my FAVORITE stage – it still is!
21) I was a famous model when I was a teenager. My dog Todo and I modeled a pooper scooper!!! It was in catalogs across the country! I am sure you have seen it.
22) My family celebrates “Birthday weeks” instead of just one day.
23) I find myself walking down a new path in life – it is a little scary – but I am excited for what my future holds
24) I love snorkeling.
25) I am a very social person

Bud wrote 25 things!!!

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Of all the neat things I have enjoyed so far in the 25 thing thing (yes, I meant to write thing thing), I must say I am the MOST excited by Bud’s participation.  He’s not a wordy guy, so I did not actually expect him to participate.  But, participate he did.  The overachiever wrote 28 things!!  I am pretty thrilled he did.  Like the DustMeister, I’ve written a few comments in-line in Bud’s favorite color GREEN.  Here you go Bud:

I guess I should join in the fun

  1. 1. I never thought Magoo would admit to missing me.  (Me either, that was pretty awesome!)
    2. I have seen nearly every episode of over 25 different animes.
    3. I probably know more about Heroes than everyone else who reads this blog put together.
    4. When I’m quiet, I usually just can’t think of anything worth saying.  (Explain this further please)
    5. I can dislocate 14 different joints.
    6. I have 3 posters and a bunch of pictures in my apartment hiding in a corner that I never got around to putting up.  (You could do it now you know)
    7. I once made a homemade pizza from scratch. It took me 5 and a half hours and tasted horrible. I added a tablespoon of salt when I should have added a teaspoon.  (He is right, it was horrible.  I wanted to like it but I could not)
    8. I would love to have a super power. I’d take any one. I just want one.
    9. I wish I could draw.
    10. I have a lot of obsessions (aka Heroes, animes, super powers, etc), but I don’t talk about them because I assume that whoever I’m talking to doesn’t want to talk about them.
    11. If you ever tell me that you share in one of my obsessions, we will talk about that a lot. You have been warned
    12. I could live off mac and cheese and pizza.  (and you have!)
    13. The reason I’m usually late is because I don’t like arriving early. So I try to arrive at exactly on time. It just usually doesn’t work out.  (I did not know this!)
    14. I’m easily entertained and easily bored. You wouldn’t think those 2 would go together but they somehow do.
    15. It get annoyed by computer screens in movies but the majority of the time, what you see on a computer in a movie would never appear on an actual computer screen.  (The true mark of a geek)
    16. I’m also annoyed when people say in movies, commercials, tv shows, etc that no one would actually say in real life.
    17. I don’t like talking about myself
    18. I have taken 4 years of Spanish and I still can’t speak the language  (mucho grande!!!!)
    19. It’s comforting for me to have a knife in my hands. (I know it’s creepy, but it’s true)
    20. I could never live in a city. Too many people, too much noise.
    21. I have never broken a bone. Although I did break 17 tendons in my ankle once, but no bones.  (17 tendons… I think you pulled that out of thin air.  Do people even have 17 tendons in their feet?  You did do a number on your foot, but 17 tendons?  really?)
    22. I have a lot of patience with people, but not a lot with machines.
    23. I’m very easily distracted…o hey, I’m late for Imago Dei. I need to go.  (Nice transition)Comment by Bud — February 10, 2009 @ 9:02 pm
  2. Here’s the rest. No more interruptions, I promise.24. I get nervous going through those scanner things at the entrance of stores that make sure you aren’t stealing anything. I’m always worried that they’ll go off. I think it’s because I carried a “set those scanner things off” circuit in my wallet for a while, not knowing what it did. I just thought it looked cool. Except it kept making those scanner things go off when I walked into stores.

    25. I like not wearing a shirt. I find that it’s very comfortable. I don’t just do it to freak Magoo out (that’s an added bonus)  (it is, isn’t it?)

    26. (bonus) I always have 5-6 writing utensils on my pockets. I’ll say they’re for school, except I only use 1 or 2 of them (the rest are either broken, out of lead, or pens (pens suck but I always have at least one on me)). I’ll also say that they’re for cleaning out my fingernails. But mostly I have them with me because I have busy hands and they always need to be playing with something. So I put them in my pocket and they play with my pencils.

    27. (another bonus (because of the interruption)) I don’t use shaving cream when I shave

    Comment by Bud — February 10, 2009 @ 11:50 pm

  3. Last one, I swear28. When I’m doing something I enjoy, I want to be very through about it. I like to watch every episode of a tv show in order. With video games, I want to follow every path and explore every annoyingly minute detail. And so on.

I love you Bud!!

And now for Emmy’s 25

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

You know, I’m surprised how this simple little “25 things” exercise has reflected so much it seems on the essence of a person.  Emmy is particularly introspective and artistic and these really shine through here.

I’m especially grateful she wrote these as it helps me understand her better I think.  I’m really glad.

And, now, Emmy’s 25:

1. As much as I really don’t like people’s attention to be focused on me, I love when people ask me questions about me & how I am doing.

2. I am an artist. My being and soul are art to me.

3. I see everyone as an artist, because I believe that we are all artist with our lives. Some people paint with better techniques, but only God is judge.

4. I am scared to death of having children. I love kids, but the whole birthing process, and taking care of them, and possibly ruining them scares me to no end.

5. I am soooooo guilty of run-on sentences, but I really don’t feel too bad about it.

6. When I am home alone (or sometimes not), I turn the music up as loud as it goes and I dance like I am the greatest ballet dancer in the world, or hip-hop.

7. I love Jesus Christ, who saved me. He is good all the time. Even through any and all pain in life.

8. I love my family for all of their amazingly wonderful qualities.

9. I am in love with nature. When the temperature got up above 60 degrees this weekend, I took a nap outside on the bridge leading up to my house.

10. I actually really care about people in the world, but I disguise it with cynicism.

11. Music. This should be self-explanatory, but music is my soul rhythm, another facet of the art within.

12. Although I have only touched a cello once in my life, I have a connection with it. I think that I already know how to play, it is just a matter of tuning my fingers/ears.

13. I have a love of travel, languages, lives, cultures, etc.

14. My heart is actually incredibly huge.

15. I am going to change the world, and I plan on doing it by love. I am a modern day hippie without the drugs, sex, and alcohol.

16. I am contemplating becoming a tattoo artist, or a starving artist, or a landscape architect, or a photographer. If all else fails, hobo.

17. I love gardens. Someday, I am going to have my own secret garden. But, shhhhhhhhhhhh, it is a secret.

18. I am the moon.

19. I am called a wide range of names. There are lots of forms of Emily, and I have some nicknames too. I have only let two people (in my memory) call me by a nickname that I respond to as my own name. I only allow certain people this privilege. Very certain.

20. I have a constant, nagging fear that I always annoy people. But at the same time, that never makes me stop being who I am (maybe I should let it sometime).

21. I have learned a couple things in life. Life is hard, but God is bigger than the air I breathe, the world we’ll leave. And that he is love. And that love carries (sometimes drags it seems) us through the pain into truly living.

22. I always shut down compliments, but what people don’t realize is that I always am listening, and storing them in my heart.

23. I never have opinions on anything (*cough* *cough* Sarcasm *cough* *cough*)

24. I dream of a world of love, not going to college, finding my man, being with my bestiest friend in the world, and helping change the world and the lives of the people in it for the better. Oh, and alot more that i don’t have the time to list.

25. I am a person filled with passion. Passion for life. Passion for people. Just so much passion. I discover this more and more everyday. I get this from both my earthly and my heavenly father, and you know what? It is a great thing.

Magoo’s 25 Thingers

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

The following is from Magoo.  Here’s what I love the most about her 25 things…  well, I can’t pick.  I was going to point out some of the ones that I loved the most, or that made me laugh the most, but they are all SO Magoo that I can’t pick.

Anyone else want to post 25 things?  Comment.  I’d love to learn more…

And now onto Magoo’s 25:

25 Things

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Lots of people on Facebook have been posting 25 random facts about themselves.  I’ve learned some fun facts.  So, since everybody’s doin’ it, I will too.

  1. I was born on Jan. 14, 1964.  My great grandfather, a fire and brimstone Baptist preacher, was born one hundred years to the day before me on Jan. 14, 1864.  As a kid, I thought this was fascinating.
  2. My mother’s middle name is Joyce, my middle name is Joyce, my daughter’s middle name is Joyce.  I don’t particularly like the name Joyce, but I like that we all share it.
  3. I have officially lived in 17 different residences in four different states.
  4. I have known Jesus as my Savior since I was 15 and I have attempted to have this fact shape everything in my life since then.  I am a sinner, but I am forgiven.
  5. I am convinced I have A.D.D. even though I’ve never been officially screened or diagnosed.
  6. Other than grandparents, not a single person I was ever truly close to has died, up until my father this past April.
  7. Some believe our treasures in heaven may be inversely proportional to the treasures we have on this earth.  I often think to myself, if this is the case, I’m pretty sure I’ll have a lovely little studio apartment just at the end of the streets of gold while most others are in mansions.  I’m OK with this.
  8. SweetGuy and I went to the Homecoming dance when I was 15 and he was 16.  I thought it was a date.  He thought we were just friends.  He is mistaken.
  9. If there is such a thing as having a soul mate, then I married mine.  SweetGuy is a lot nicer than his wife.
  10. I applied to go into the Peace Corps when I was nineteen.  They turned me down.  I still hope to do it someday.
  11. Two of my favorite things to do in order to de-stress are take a bath, or mow my yard.
  12. I sometimes wish I’d had more children, but God has a plan, and my life is overflowing with young people I did not give birth to.  I love it this way.
  13. Most of said young people call me Mrs. Miller.  I am impressed by their respectfulness, but honestly would just rather be called Andrea.
  14. I pretend I don’t like animals, but I really do.  If it wasn’t for SweetGuy, both dogs would be sleeping in my bed.
  15. Every single time my son walks into the room, I think to myself “Has he grown?”  I still can’t believe how tall he is.
  16. Throughout grade school and high school, I always yearned for a best girl friend.  I have since had a few that have come in and out of my life for different reasons.  I cherish having known them.
  17. I have a best friend now.  She is my daughter.
  18. I hate loud music.  Unless I am at Miracle Camp.  Then, the louder, the better.
  19. I fear the Cubs will not win a World Series in my lifetime.
  20. The characteristics I find the least appealing in people are arrogance and self importance.
  21. As a teen I worked four or five summers selling elephant ears and cotton candy at local fairs and such for $2/hour.  I met all types.
  22. I worked at the Motherhouse as a nurse’s aide while I was in high school.  I was so impressed by the nuns selflessness and love of Jesus.  They could also be very, very funny.
  23. I once ran a live mouse through the hot cycle of my washing machine.  Twice.
  24. I shattered my wrist when I was skiing.  I turned this way when I should have turned that way.
  25. SweetGuy and I could not agree on what to name our first born.  I was convinced I would have a girl so I made the deal that if it was a boy he could name it, and if it was a girl I could.  I was wrong.

I’d LOVE to see your 25 things!  Leave them in the comments if you dare and I will re-post them as a full blog post.
